Readings

This weeks reading by Killen, highlights the need for direct instruction teaching strategies. After reading the definition of what is direct instruction, I can see myself  using this teaching strategies quite frequently in the classroom. Killen explains the value of using this teaching strategy effectively. The when , what , how and why use of the direct instruction teaching strategy is explained in detail giving examples to ensure the method is implemented successful. The importance of clarity, variety, scaffolding, student engagement and feedback is very important in  effective teachings of this strategy.
This generation of students don't just accept answers as they are. They  want to know how and why. Self-discovery plays an important role in the How and Why of  education of students. Finding out things for themselves enforces learning and remembering. However, there is a certain amount of control through direct instruction the teacher still needs to give to create an effective teaching model. The teacher needs to direct the students towards the area of learning for desired outcomes.
Bloom's Taxonomy helps teachers understand the level of questioning and categorise the levels of the cognitive process they will focus on.
