Pupil Free Day... Staff Development Day (Visit 4)

Even though it was a pupil free day today, I thought I would still go to prac as I wanted to find out what the teachers did on these days. I knew they would be planning the term and I am very interested in learning as much as I can.
Element 3 of the NSW  Institute of Teachers' Professional Teaching requires " teachers to plan, assess and report for effective learning". Documentation of  teaching is a way that if the teacher can't teach the class another teacher will be able to step straight in and take over the class, knowing exactly where the class is at. This planning and documentation legitimises the teachers work. Staff Development Days help the teachers plan.
As the leader of the school the principal addressed the teachers about expectations. The professional profile of the teacher and what is expected. Do your job and do it well. Lead by example and be consistent. Team work and make sure we are all on the same page. This raised the question about a writen document for acceptable playground behaviour. I was supprised this was not already in place.
The teachers were given an update on the students physical and mental issues ranging from students with allergies to dog saliva, holes in the heart, asthma, heat re-actions to students receiving chemotherapy for brain tumors as well as physical and mental disabilities. A list of court orders was handed to the teachers for updates on who is allowed or not allowed to do what to who. All teachers need to get to know the students as they will be in contact with them at some point.  Teaching is becoming very complex and the welfare of the students is of utmost importance. Teachers are professionals and owe a duty of care to the students. The code of ethics for teaching is based on respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication. (Groundwater-Smith,S. Ewing,R. &Le Cornu,R.)
The HAT teacher talked about the National Partnerships Program(NPP) and how the school will be focusing on sustainable programs. Research indicates that students in schools in low-socioeconomic areas perform poorly. The NPP attracts quality educators to these schools. The HAT teacher introduced John Hattie's research on " Teachers Make a Difference".  The characteristics of the Expert teacher as apposed to Experienced teachers. This brought tension among the teachers as most of them had been teaching for many years and felt their teaching strategies were being challenged.
After lunch the teachers focused on planning the terms work. The English co-ordinator addressed the teachers about Information reporting and resources that would be valuable for teaching the class. The teachers then worked in stages to develop a plan. It was interesting to watch the teachers prepare the plan for the term. Where they started and how they build upon each week to reach the desired outcomes at the end of the term. Most of the teachers use the software program TESS which does most of the documentation for you.
Unfortunately, technology in the classroom was not mentioned. The lack of technology in the school is mainly due to the construction that is going on at the moment. This is limiting the use of technology resources and there are no technology resources available to our class.  As a graduate teacher I need to be proficient in the use of Information technology skills and Element 4 of the NSW  Institute of Teachers' Professional Teaching requires a graduate teacher to "use a range of teaching strategies and resources including ICT and other technologies to foster interest and support learning." Therefore as posted in my previous blog, What do I want from my prac teaching, it is important that in my second or third prac placement I go to a school that has access to this technology.
This is an ICT resource that I created myself for a resourse in my skill presentation on questioning. http://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/7932030
